Chief Forecasting Officer · Forecaster for Brazil
“Every time I write a forecast, I picture a surfer who, like me, has to fit work and life around surfing to be in the right place at the right time.”
Luiz discovered forecasting in the late 90s, when the first NOAA wave charts showed up on surf websites. Since then his life revolves around the ocean: he plans almost everything around wave and weather forecasts.
He holds a Doctor of Science in Ocean Engineering from COPPE/UFRJ, where he worked on computational wave propagation models and research on multifunctional artificial reefs.
He spent more than 11 years at Surfline as the forecaster for Brazil, and he calls contests like the “Arpoador Clássico”, which only runs in classic conditions. He chairs the Rio de Janeiro State Surf Federation (FESERJ) and founded the Arpoador Surf Club.
At Lineup he leads the forecasting team: training, method and forecasting strategy in the four countries. His focus: clear, objective information, and teaching people to read the waves so they can improve their own forecasts.
Written by Luiz for the regions of Brazil, several times a week.
